The New York Hall of Science is an interactive science museum and landmark attraction of Queens, NY. This project is a UI prototype created to improve museum visitors’ experience.
The current official NYSCI website can be found at www.nysci.org.
This is a portfolio project with no budget. Since I conducted this project remotely, I had limited access to interviewees from my target audience - museum visitors.
The New York Hall of Science is a museum with a great mission, and provides the community with many valuable educational resources. However, their website has many usability issues. The information is incohesive and doesn’t provide a clear narrative for users.
This redesign establishes a clear hierarchy of information and follows a visual style guide. It advertises the different offerings of the museum, while keeping important functions like ticket purchasing easily accessible.
I am the sole contributor.

There are many well established peer organizations and competitors to NYSCI. The following examples are websites from other science and math museums in NYC.
American Museum of Natural History website
MoMATH website
MoMath uses a simple blog format to list
The current website uses large blocks of red in their visual theme. The bright red is attention-grabbing but disorienting. It detracts from important elements like the “Join and Support” button and the email subscription section.
There is no clear demarcation from one section to the next, and the heading font size is inconsistent. There are also sections with mixed rows and columns of text, which makes it hard to parse information at a natural pace.
I started out by identifying the content blocks and rearranging them to establish a clear navigation where users can find the information they need.
The final high-fidelity prototypes use a consistent design system, and has a clear hierarchy of information.
The color scheme is faithful to the original, but red is used as an accent for CTA buttons, logos, and the most important elements.
